Presentation: Where Purpose Meets Planning

How to Achieve Engaged Family Governance — Dos and Don’ts

Dennis Jaffe & David York (Moderator)

There is a tendency for consultants to want to do the work of family governance on behalf of their clients. This diminishes their capability. For family governance to be effective, the family has to be engaged. Effective family governance is characterized by high-engagement and collaboration among and also across generations. Alliances are created that include:

(i) the elders, who supply vision and wisdom,
(ii) the professional executives and advisors, who supply professional and financial skills, and
(iii) the rising generation, who challenge boundaries and innovate.

Langdon Evans & Babetta von Albertini (Moderator)

Family Governance can take different forms and serve different functions. Langdon will discuss the crucial role family governance played in the successful transition of his 7th generation family business to the next generation. He will also share the important lessons his family learned. For Langdon, the most important lesson learned is: "put governance in place before you need it!"

Fiduciaries serve families over decades. During an extended period of time, they witness firsthand what can happen when an old guard of decision makers fails to plan for an orderly transition to the NextGeneration. They have also experienced what families can do well to facilitate this critical process. Mark will moderate a panel with Marina, Johan and Andrew, who are experienced fiduciaries. They will each discuss a case study of an inter-generational transition and will share (i) what went well, (ii) what could have been done better and (iii) the lessons learned.

Successful Inter-Generational Transitions: How to Change the Governance Structure to Make Room for the Next Generation – Case Studies

Chip Fisher, Katie Darnall, Kiki Tauck Mahar & Edouard Thijssen (Moderator)

Once a family reaches the G3 or G4 stages, the governance structure needs to be altered to permit a larger group of family members to participate in the collective decision making. Edouard will moderate a family panel where family members will discuss the governance structure of their respective family systems and provide examples of how the governance structure of their family system was altered to make room for the NextGeneration. In addition, they will briefly touch on the family protocols that needed to be implemented to provide: (i) transparency of the requirements needed for a NextGen to be able to participate in the governance structure, and (ii) the agreed upon processes that needed to be followed.

Keynote: Engaging & Inspiring the Next Generation

C. Mead Welles

Mead will share his childhood experiences of growing up as a family member of Carson Pirie Scott until the business was sold to Bergner in 1989. He will discuss the opportunities and challenges the family faced after becoming a financial family and the hard lessons learned. Mead will share how his personal values were forever transformed when volunteering during high school at the Perkins School for the Blind. Working with handicapped children taught Mead how a community can create and support a value system that empowers people with disabilities. This led to the founding of ALTSO, "A Leg To Stand On", a charity that provides for physical, social, and upward mobility for children living with limb disabilities around the world. ALTSO has created the Rocktoberfest community that raises funds in New York and Chicago to help handicapped children globally.
