Babetta von Albertini, Ph.D. | IFG Founder & Chair

Babetta is the Chair of the Institute for Family Governance. She is an expert on family governance and U.S. tax law and has advised large domestic and international families on their governance and succession planning for approaching twenty years. Babetta is also the General Counsel of ATM Capital Partners, a single family office. Prior thereto, she was with Withers (a global trusts and estates law firm) for nine years, and Shearman & Sterling (a capital markets law firm) for three years, living and working in New York, London, Switzerland and Hong Kong. Babetta is a dual-qualified common law/civil law attorney (admitted to the bars of New York and Zurich, Switzerland) and holds both a Tax LL.M. and a Corporate LL.M. from NYU, as well as a Ph.D. in law from the University of Zurich, Switzerland. She currently serves as elected U.S. representative on the STEP Global Council (the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners).

Dennis T. Jaffe, Ph.D. | Vice-Chair

Dr. Jaffe, a San Francisco-based advisor to families about family business, governance, wealth and philanthropy, recently completed the working papers Governing the Family Enterprise: The Evolution of Family Councils, Assemblies and Constitutions, Releasing the Potential of the Rising Generation, and Good Fortune: Building a Hundred Year Family Enterprise, published by Wise Counsel Research, based on his current research with global multi-generational family enterprises. Dennis is author (or co-author) of Cross Cultures: How Global Families Negotiate Change Across Generations;  Stewardship in your Family Enterprise: Developing Responsible Family Leadership Across Generations, and Working With the Ones You Love, as well as management books Rekindling Commitment, Getting Your Organization to Change and Take this Work and Love It. He has a BA degree in Philosophy, MA in Management, and Ph.D. in sociology, all from Yale University, and is professor emeritus of organizational systems and psychology at Saybrook University in San Francisco.

John E. Oden | Vice-Chair

John is a Principal and twenty-five year veteran of AllianceBernstein ("AB"), a global money management and research firm with over U.S. $500 billion under management through forty-eight offices in twenty-three countries. He has senior responsibilities in working with the firm’s non-U.S. and offshore clients, and currently heads the firm’s family office and private wealth business in Asia. In addition to similar client responsibilities in the U.S. John is the Founder of the China-U.S. Business Alliance, an organization of the senior professional advisors in both the U.S. and Asia who concentrate their business activities in China. He is a former Chairman of the New York Branch of STEP. A strong supporter of athletics, John writes and speaks about the sport of boxing. His first book, White Collar Boxing – One Man’s Journey From the Office to the Ring, was published in 2005. It was followed in 2009 by Life in the Ring – Lessons & Inspirations from the Sport of Boxing. He holds BA and MBA degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.

David R. York, Esq. CPA is a Co-Founder and Managing Partner of the Salt Lake City law firm York Howell & Guymon. He has extensive experience in designing and implementing advanced tax and estate planning strategies for high net worth clients, along with non-profit and business planning counsel. He is a Fellow with the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), a member of the Utah State Bar Budget and Finance Committee, and former Chair of the Utah State Bar Estate Planning Section. Noted as a Mountain States Rising Star in Super Lawyers Magazine, Utah Legal Elite in Utah Business Magazine and as a Top-Rated Lawyer in Trusts & Estates with Martindale-Hubbell, David has successfully represented clients before the Internal Revenue Service at all levels (Audit, Appeals, and Tax Court). Lance Bylow | Advisory Board Member, IFG New York (2020)

Lance Bylow is a Managing Director and Senior Private Banker at Citi Private Bank in New York. Lance and his private banking team work closely with successful families and their key advisors to help them address their wealth planning, credit and banking, philanthropic and investment needs. 

Lance draws up his multidisciplinary experience in private wealth management at U.S. Trust, Bessemer Trust and Lehman Brothers; investment banking at Lehman Brothers; and tax and accounting at Price Waterhouse. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations Corporate Program; the New York State Society of CPAs, where he serves on Family Office Committee; and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. Lance is a board member of the Attorneys for Family-Held Enterprises He earned a B.A. in Economics and Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences from Northwestern University, an M.S. in Accounting from DePaul University, and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Jason Ingle | G5 of the Ford family

Jason is a G5 member of the Ford family and a board member of the Ford Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company. He also serves on his family’s Investment Committee, Family Office Board of Directors, and is the Chair of their Family Council. He works individually, as well as collectively with the broader family, on integrating impact investing to move beyond just “check-writing philanthropy” for the family across the various family enterprise entities. Important questions that arise are: (i) how can the Ford Fund continue to integrate strategic philanthropy and impact investing to magnify its impact on behalf of the company; and (ii) how can G5 and G6 family members come together as a growing and geographically diverse group around a set of collective causes that are tied to the family’s legacy, but also support emerging opportunities. Jason co-founded and is Managing Partner for Closed Loop Capital, an early-stage venture capital platform investing in exceptional entrepreneurs leading ventures in agriculture technology and food system innovation within the United States and Canada. His family is also a co-founding member of The ImPact, a membership network of family enterprises (family offices, foundations, and businesses) that are committed to making investments with measurable social impact. Jason also co-founded Greener Partners, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization with a mission of building better communities through healthy food, vibrant farms, and hands-on education experiences and serving more than 12,000 children annually. Jason serves as the board chair of Equal Measure, a 25 year old 501(C)(3) organization that was originally created at UPenn Wharton tasked with supporting the strategy development and impact evaluation of many of the largest and most forward-thinking foundations and nonprofits in the US. Jason also currently serves on the boards of Greener Partners; the Ford Motor Company Fund; The Hill School; and The College of the Atlantic. Jason, his wife Sarah, and their five children and five dogs reside outside Philadelphia, PA.

Diana Hamadé is a UAE lawyer and the Founder and Managing Partner of Diana Hamade Attorneys at Law, a private practice law firm in the UAE focusing on Family Businesses and Succession Planning. She has been recognized by Thomson Reuters as the Most Influential Female Lawyer in the UAE. Diana is a fellow of the IBA (International Bar Association) currently serving as Vice-Chair for the Arab Regional Forum, IAFL (International Academy of Family Lawyers), Arbitral Women and STEP Arabia. Diana speaks regularly on family businesses, wealth planning and governance consideration. She was a speaker at the Campden Wealth 14th Family Alternative Investment Conference in London and also was a member of the keynote panel at the Middle East Family Office & Investment Conference in Abu Dhabi, speaking on Stability, Governance & Growth of Family Businesses. Diana has also written for Camden Wealth, her latest pieces included ‘Law Changes A Giant Step for UAE Succession Planning’ and ‘Tackling the Gulf Succession Crisis’. Gregory G. Greenleaf is a Principal Consultant with The Family Business Consulting Group Inc. (“FBCG”), and is an expert on succession, governance and professionalization of the family business. His highly collaborative approach and deep knowledge of family business make him a tremendous resource for clients with complex transition issues. Gregory comes from a family business, where as President of one of his family’s businesses he learned firsthand the rewards, challenges and pitfalls of running a family business, including the critical importance of issues such as succession planning, strategic planning and fostering healthy family business relations. Drawing on his background as a family therapist and clinical psychotherapist, Gregory has helped entrepreneurial families improve family relationships, resolve conflict and turn struggling enterprises into thriving businesses. His clients operate in a variety of industries including the home supply industry, manufacturing, mining, farming, real estate development, financial services and food services. Greg has served on many boards in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area including The Pittsburgh Opera, Allegheny College, the Mel Blount Youth Home and The Three Rivers Work Force Investment Board. He is a member of the Family Firm Institute, the National Eagle Scout Association and the National Association of Corporate Directors. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Studio Art and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. Gregory and his wife, Rebecca, reside in Washington D.C. and Naples, Florida.

As executive director of 21/64, the nonprofit practice she founded to serve philanthropic and family enterprises, she has created the industry’s gold-standard tools for transforming how families who give will define their values, collaborate, and govern in the decades ahead. Sharna has been a consistent presence in the philanthropic field for two decades and is known for her quiet gravitas and insight. Today, prominent nonprofits, philanthropic networks, and foundations look to Sharna for training in next generation engagement and multi-generational advising. She is the co-author of Generation Impact: How Next Gen Donors Are Revolutionizing Giving.

Kiki Tauck Mahar | G3 of the Tauck family

Kiki is a third generation owner of Tauck, Inc, her family’s 94 year old travel company, based in Wilton, Connecticut. In that role, she has helped develop and oversee the company’s Board of Directors, has established multiple family and company policies related to family ownership, including Growth and Investment Policies, a Family Employment Policy, the owner’s Shareholder Agreement as well as developing a system for accountability and decision making across multiple stake holders within their family system. In addition, she and her family have built a multi-generational governance structure to effectively support the family’s growing enterprise activities. Kiki also serves as President of the Tauck Family Foundation whose mission it is to support the development of social and emotional skills of the children in Bridgeport, Connecticut so that they can reach their full potential in school and life. She resides in Rochester, New York, with her husband, Dan, and their five children.

Andrew D. Pitcairn | G4 of the Pitcairn family

A fourth-generation family member, Andrew actively serves as Chair of the Pitcairn Family Council. Established in 1982, The Pitcairn Family Council is a platform for recognizing talent, educating family members, identifying and implementing solutions for connectedness, and interfacing directors, management and owners. After serving as both member and co-Chair, Andrew was appointed Family Council Chair in 2010. Additionally, Andrew is a member of the Pitcairn Board of Directors, co-trustee of Pitcairn family trusts, Chair of the Nominating/Governance Committee and advisory member of the Capital Committee.

Recognized as a published author and passionate speaker, Andrew regularly serves as an expert at family office and family business forums and conferences on topics related to family council and engaging the next generation.

Daniel S. Bowman | Tibbetts Family Holding Co., LLC

Daniel S. Bowman is the Family Office executive for a single-family office, serving multiple generations. The Family Office grew out of the sale of the family’s domestic lumber company, the largest privately held building material dealer in the Southeastern United States. The family’s investments include domestic and international assets in the building materials, real estate, hospitality and retail industries. As the Family Office executive, he primarily focuses on the transfer of generational wealth through estate planning, asset allocation and private equity investments. Mr. Bowman holds an M.B.A. in Finance and Information Systems from the University of South Florida and a B.A. in Economics from Emory University.

Carol A. Hannigan | Moreland Wealth Services Corporation

Carol A. Hannigan is President and General Counsel of Moreland Wealth Services Corporation, a single-family wealth management office for the Jeffrey Horvitz family in Beverly, Massachusetts. Carol handles all litigation, investment, trust and estate planning, audit and compliance matters and is responsible for developing and executing wealth transfer and tax planning strategies for family members. She coordinates the work of external advisors, as needed, and also handles next generation education. Carol serves as a key senior advisor to all family members.

Prior to joining Moreland in 2010, Carol spent over twenty years as a commercial real estate and corporate attorney in Boston, advising wealthy families, investors and developers on real estate and private equity investments, as well as related trust and estate tax planning matters. She was a Partner at Hale and Dorr LLP (now Wilmer Hale). Carol received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Simmons College and her J.D. from Boston University School of Law.

Whitaker B. Irvin, Jr. | G5 of the Irvin family

Whitaker Irvin Jr. is a founder and the Chief Executive Officer of Q Hydrogen Solutions Corporation, a pioneer in the field of alternative energy. He is responsible for the commercialization of their innovative hydrogen technology, and his background includes technology deployment and program management at the aerospace and defense firm Raytheon Company. Previously he worked in the financial sector including Fidelity Investments. Mr. Irvin graduated from Babson College in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Global Business Management. He is also a certified Project Management Professional and currently resides in Park City, Utah with his wife Morgan.

Family enterprises are different from public companies in that their owners have personal relationships, share a set of values about relationships, business, their communities and have a vision of a desired future they want to pass on to their children, leading them to adapt a long-term view of their interests. This leads successful global families to develop a view of desired social impact, that they pass on to their companies (through Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability practices), investments (through Impact Investments), and responsibility to their community (philanthropy and social impact investments). In a study of long-term global family enterprises, we look at how values and legal structures determine how a family uses their wealth to align with their values and have a positive impact on the world around them.

Failure of business continuity and the rise of family feuds have led Arabian Gulf families to adopt a new approach to succession planning and governance in the recent years. Diana will discuss Middle Eastern family business governance and succession planning in a jurisdiction where forced heirship rules apply. She will share her insight into the options available for families where there are multiple wives and children, and the policies and processes that can be used to obtain family buy-in from this large group of beneficiaries. The goal is to reach agreement, protect the continuity of the family business and minimize the risk of future challenges.

For many enterprising families, succession planning involves more than just leadership and ownership transitions from one generation to another. Often, successful continuity planning involves simultaneously transitioning multiple generations across many complex entities, including operating companies, family offices, family foundations and numerous trusts. Establishing a collaborative team of advisors who proactively coordinate with the extended family helps families navigate these transitions. We will go beyond theory and present real-world examples of families who have leveraged this team of advisors to achieve optimal outcomes for stronger futures.

This presentation will discuss a completely different paradigm for wealth transfer and will discuss the importance of capturing and transferring human capital skills, how to maximize the benefits of financial wealth transfer, and what can be done with excess financial resources. It will review seven disciplines that successful families follow to effectively transfer holistic wealth on a multi-generational basis. It will also talk about how to build and foster stewards, individuals who are fully invested and completely engaged in something far bigger than themselves.

Involving all generations in the family enterprise is often seen as an insurmountable task. Questions that arise include: (i) who is interested;(ii) how do we get them interested; and (iii) do we even want them to be interested? This session will discuss a possible spectrum of engagement within the family business, family office, family council and foundation. Often one's position on this spectrum of engagement seems random or associated with time of life events. However, members can move forward and backward on this spectrum of engagement through evaluation of where they stand and pro-active preparation for the next stage. We will share proven strategies implemented within all four areas that successfully engaged all generations to help attain their full potential.

Creating a Sustainable, Multi-Generation Family Office

Carol will share her experience in going beyond asset planning to build a sustainable family office to serve a multi-generational family. She will also discuss the evolving role of the family office executive in identifying and planning for the family's needs and goals beyond the traditional focus on investment management, accounting and tax planning. These may include governance structures and initiatives such as a private trust company, a family council, and next generation education.

Whitaker Irvin Jr. is the fifth generation of the Irvin family, and represents the transition from a family’s focus on hydrocarbons. The legacy of the Whitakers, the Williams, and the Irvin family will take us all the way from Scottish nobility, to the old wild west days of oil, gas, ranching and mining, and more recently, to the strategic shift from petrochemicals to hydrogen technology. This journey included the founding of the family enterprises, challenging family transitions, and today the exciting world of alternative energy. Whit will share his thoughts on the process of deciding to leave an established career to join his father, and ultimately how his generations values have helped shape their families renewed entrepreneurial focus on the future.
