Pre-conference Workshop: How to Define and Use Your Personal Values as a Source of Excellence for Your Family Enterprise
Dennis Jaffe
Many successful family enterprises credit their values as the core of who they are, and why they succeed in the long term. They proudly share values statements. But reporting a value does not do anything for the family until it is put into action. How does a family not only define its values but make them real and impactful?
This workshop begins with personal values -- using a deck of 56 values cards each participant will create their Personal Values Pyramid defining (i) who they are, (ii) how they make decisions and (iii) how they organize their life priorities. We will learn how values can be shared within a family and become the basis for exploring together the meaning and purpose of the family wealth.
The second part of the workshop will explore how a family can draw on personal values to define shared values as a family and also as a family enterprise. We will look at how individuals can “champion” a value and craft an actionable values statement that gives substance. Dennis will share stories of how personal and shared values added value and impact to a family enterprise.
How to Use Organizational Values as a Force for Innovation and Excellence
Dennis Jaffe & Gabriella Orengo Lyons
In Dennis Jaffe's study of 100-year families, the largest number of families cite shared values as a major factor in their success. Dennis and Gabriella's presentation will look at the nature of values—personal values, shared family values and organizational values—and how they can become a major force for aligned development of the family enterprise. The presentation will begin with looking at meaning and models of personal values, and how they can impact a multi-generational family and its enterprises, and then look at how values can become active guides to effective and adaptive forces for development. Dennis and Gabriella will share several powerful examples of values in action.
Family Governance Tools: How to Use Shareholder Agreements Effectively—Dos and Don’ts
Sarah Constantine, Mark S. Kingsley, & Ben Francois (Moderator)
Often families will work with a business advisor on succession and control of their family business, but too often they do not take the next step to document their plan in a legally binding agreement. Many well-intentioned families who have succession plans in place -- or at least an “understanding” -- find themselves at critical junctures without a legal framework outlining the family members’ rights and restrictions. This can lead to disputes and often chaos as “soft agreements” or “understandings” typically won’t hold up in court. Ben will lead a discussion with Sarah and Mark to discuss how shareholder and operating agreements can provide certainty and clarity at pivotal crossroads. Their interactive and informative session will address: (i) why it is important for family members to enter into binding shareholder or operating agreements, (ii) what essential governance provisions to include (such as board composition and shareholder consent rights, and dealing with deadlocks), (iii) transfer restrictions and how to provide family members with liquidity when they need it, and (iv) balancing competing concerns of different generations or different groups of family members (e.g., those actively running the business vs. others). They will conclude with 3-5 actionable Key Takeaways.
How to Empower the Next Generation through Entrepreneurship
Dr. Matt Allen & Mark Haranzo (Moderator)
Leaders of family businesses and family offices alike are concerned about the next generation. Questions that arise include: (i) how should the next generation be prepared for leadership, (ii) how can families avoid dependence and entitlement in the next generation, and (iii) what tools and knowledge will best help members of the next generation to be successful in their own efforts? Many of these important questions about the next generation can be addressed by building an entrepreneurial mindset. Research findings indicate that without a deliberate effort on the part of the family, entrepreneurial mindsets will diminish in later generations. Matt and Mark will share cutting edge research being conducted at the John L. Ward Center for Family Enterprises. Conference attendees will learn both the cause of this generational decline and what families can do to avoid generational decline in entrepreneurial capability and will be provided with legal tools that can be used to foster entrepreneurial capability in the next generation.
When Purpose Meets Planning
David York
David will start with an overview of what wealth creators, entrepreneurs, investors and employees are looking for in the 21st Century, particularly when it comes to infusing purpose into businesses, investments, and estate planning. He will then review specific strategies and practical, actionable steps that can be used to employ those purposes. Specifically, David will review B corporations, purpose trusts, the so-called “Newman’s Only Exception” to private foundation ownership of for-profit businesses, and utilizing program related investments in philanthropy. David will conclude with 3-5 practical, actionable Key Takeaways.
How to Identify and Train the Next Generation of Family Leaders
Laird Koldyke, Colleen Ritzau Leth, & Gaia Marchisio (Moderator)
We are on the cusp of witnessing the greatest transfer of wealth in history, with a new generation poised to become the stewards of significant family wealth, often including operating companies. This makes identifying and cultivating the next generation of family leaders a critical priority for multi-generational families. Gaia will lead a discussion with Laird and Colleen who will share their personal journeys to leadership within their families, offering insights into how they have navigated the complexities of balancing legacy and innovation. Attendees will explore strategies to co-create a shared legacy that resonates across generations, ensuring younger family members are empowered to become not only stewards of the family’s values and traditions but also visionary leaders who can chart a forward-looking path. Learn the key traits of effective nextgen leaders and discover actionable steps to provide them with the education, mentorship, and opportunities needed to thrive.
When Succession is Done Well: R. Seelaus & Co. Case Study
Annie Seelaus & Drew Mason (Moderator)
Only 30% of family-owned businesses have a successful transition from the first generation to the second generation. R. Seelaus & Co. is one of them. In this session Annie will share how she was brought into the family business by her father after a successful career at HSBC in London and New York. Annie came to Seelaus to lead the firm’s expanding sales and trading department and her extensive background in financial markets brought valuable expertise to the organization. In 2015, Annie was appointed CEO, marking the company's transition into a women-owned business. Under Annie's leadership, the firm has continued to flourish, embracing innovation and adapting to the dynamic financial services landscape. Drew and Annie will discuss the well-crafted, intentional transition from G1 to G2, and then briefly touch on a typical R. Seelaus & Co. investment that combines financial returns with positive impact, allowing investors to “do well while doing good”.
