Leadership, values, and strong governance: how to create and maintain a charitable institution that has been relevant and beloved for more than 150 years

Steve Salzinger has served on the boards of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) and the NYC Technology Development Corporation. In that capacity, he was able to witness both exceptional governance at the MET and problematic governance as part of the City of New York. One of the reasons the MET continues to be relevant and beloved can be found in its history and governance. On October 14, 1869, the founding members set out to create an enduring institution with strong checks and balances. In their words, they wanted to create "an amply endowed, thoroughly constructed art institution free alike from bungling government officials; and free from the control of a single individual, whose mistaken and untrained zeal may lead to certain failure".
