Fostering the family's entrepreneurial spirit over 400 years: How to truly empower the next generation

Nan-Bowles (Nan-b) de Gaspé Beaubien was a key partner in the successful growth of Telemedia, a company founded by her husband Philippe in 1968. Telemedia grew to become a leader in the media communications industry in Canada and was named as one of the best one hundred Canadian employers for three consecutive years. Then, in 2002, the family decided to sell the business. Why would Nan-b and Philippe sell the business that they created together? The answer is that they did not. The decision was made by their three children. By empowering the next generation to make this decision and to invest the proceeds into new, entrepreneurial ventures of their own, Nan-b and Philippe were following a deeply engrained family value. By fostering the entrepreneurial spirit in each generation, the family has been able to thrive as a successful entrepreneurial family over 400 years.
