The Leader in Late Adulthood: Finding Value for the Enterprise and Meaning for the Self

Determining how, and when, to transition out of leadership is the most important challenge for senior family leaders. The wisdom of leaders in later years is valuable human capital, hard-won and tricky to pass on. How can senior executives and governors recognize the right moment and the most gracious way to step out of authority roles, while conveying to their successors as much as possible of their experience, judgment, and lifetime of networking? Even more daunting are the dilemmas facing the leaders themselves: "What's next? What will fill the space in my life with meaning? How can I make this transition empowering for both generations, neither premature nor too late?" This session will introduce concepts from adult development research and organizational transitions, and then focus on an exchange of experiences and plans with attendees of all generations. 

More About Kelin

Kelin Gersick is a Lecturer in Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine, a former Management Fellow at the Yale School of Management, and Professor Emeritus of Organizational Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology. He is also co-founder of Lansberg, Gersick & Associates, a research and consulting firm in New Haven, Connecticut, that serves family businesses, family offices and family foundations.

Kelin's work as a researcher, consultant, writer, and teacher, focuses on the impact of family relationships on family businesses and philanthropy. He has written extensively on the ways that marriage, parenting, and family dynamics between generations and branches are reflected in governance and continuity. He is the lead author of Generation to Generation: Life Cycles of the Family Business (1997) and Generations of Giving: Leadership and Continuity in Family Foundations (2004), and many articles, cases, and columns.

Kelin holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and a B.A. from Yale University, where he also served on the faculty. His work with family business and family foundations has taken him throughout North America and to more than 35 countries in Central and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and Africa.
