How to Structure an Effective Family Meeting — Dos and Don’ts

Tom Rogerson

Over the last 30 years, Tom Rogerson has helped over 300 families start a Family Meeting Process. Tom’s motto is: “A strong business cannot hold a family together, but a strong family can hold a business together.” Yet, Tom continues to see that most enterprising families primarily focus on business, investment and trusts at their family meetings – topics that should only form a very small portion of the Family Meeting Process. So, how does a Family Meeting Process work that focuses on the family (and not on the business)? And, why is a Family Meeting Process that focuses on the family (and not the business) the most important tradition a family can pass down from one generation to the next? In this session, Tom will share: (i) the importance of a Family Meeting Process, (ii) the evolution of agendas and best practices, (iii) how to get started, and (iv) how to revitalize a Framily Meeting Process.

What Can Trusted Advisors Do to Help Facilitate a Successful Inter-Generational Transfer? — Practical Case Studies

Giulia Cipollini, Paul J. D’Alessandro, Jr., and Mark Haranzo (Moderator)

Attorneys often work with families over decades. During this prolonged time, they can become a trusted advisor of the patriarch or matriarch. Opportunities may arise when the client asks the trusted advisor for input on an inter-generational transfer, often with the lead-in: "what do other families do in this type of situation". Mark will lead a discussion with Giulia and Paul who will each discuss a case study of an inter-generational transfer and will share (i) what went well, (ii) what could have been done better, and (iii) the lessons learned.

How to Achieve Engaged Family Governance—Wealth 3.0

Dennis Jaffe

Forty years ago, the field of family wealth advising began to expand beyond the tradition of caring mostly for the money. We now stand at the threshold of the next major transformation, strengthening the focus on family while shedding the fears and flaws that invaded beliefs about the rich. This new approach emphasizes families' strengths and capability, and enlists them in collaboration to design and create their future as a family and family enterprise. Dennis will share how the field arrived at this point and what is needed to establish a positive vision of family wealth. Through relatable stories and insightful recommendations, Wealth 3.0 offers a modern manifesto. It challenges the field of family wealth advising to become the enduring, scalable, rigorous profession it was always destined to be.

Family Governance that Meets Your Family's Current and Future Needs: Learning from Case Studies

Claudia Binz Astrachan

There is no "one-size-fits-all" when it comes to governing a business family. What is more, an effective family governance system mustn't just meet the needs your family has today, but also have the ability to adjust to tomorrow's circumstances. What does a living, breathing governance system look like for a multigenerational family whose needs and wants evolve across generations? By analyzing the family governance systems of three multi-generational business families, Claudia will identify developmental patterns, common challenges and success factors that effective and sustainable family governance systems share.

Successful Inter-Generational Transitions: How to Change the Governance Structure to Make Room for the NextGeneration

Kirby Rosplock, Marianna Andrade, and Jason Ingle

Once a family reaches the G4 or G5 stages, the governance structure needs to be altered to permit a larger group of family members to participate in the collective decision making. Jason, Kirby and Marianna will discuss their respective family systems and provide examples of how the governance structure of their family system had to be altered to make room for the NextGeneration. In addition, they will briefly touch on the family protocols that needed to be implemented to provide: (i) transparency of the requirements needed for a NextGen to be able to participate in the governance structure, and (ii) the agreed upon processes that needed to be followed.
