IFG Europe 2023 Pre-conference Workshop (Milan): What Do You Do When Your Majority Owner Is Your Grandfather’s Charitable Foundation?

Dr. Sonja Kissling, Family Business Matters

The Importance of Understanding Family Culture and its Impact on Planning for Future Generations

Peter Leach

It's all very well having a brilliant structure and a beautifully crafted family charter setting out a rule for virtually any contingency, but will it work in practice? And if it won't, what are the things that are getting in the way and blocking a smooth transition to the next generation and beyond? How do families therefore ensure that they walk the talk of what they have agreed to do, and why is implementation so much harder than the theory?

Peter will explore these issues in his opening talk.

What Can Trusted Advisors Do to Help Facilitate a Successful Inter-Generational Transfer? — Case Studies

Dr. Mario König, Dr. Sonja Kissling, Edward Reed, and Marco Cerrato

Attorneys often work with families over decades. During this prolonged time, they can become a trusted advisor of the patriarch or matriarch. Opportunities may arise when the client asks the trusted advisor their input on an inter-generational transfer, often with the lead-in: "what do other families do in this type of situation". Mario, Sonja and Edward will each discuss a case study of an inter-generational transfer and will share (i) what went well, (ii) what could have been done better, and (iii) the lessons learned.

To Sell or Not to Sell the Family Business?

Matthew Fleming

An operating business can be a unifying factor for a family. As long as the business is owned, the family has a shared purpose. But what happens when the operating business is sold? Is there any reason for a family to stay together? Matthew will share his family's experiences upon the sale of their interest in Robert Fleming, the London based merchant bank. Once the family business was sold, the challenges of mere liquid wealth became appa-rent. One mistake made by the post-sale leadership was too much emphasis on financial structuring and returns, which caused enormous pressure for the family system. Matthew will share the lessons he and his family learnt about leadership, values, and the importance of finding a new shared purpose for the family.

Presentation: To Sell or Not to Sell the Family Business?

Fiduciary Challenges: How to Assist Families with Inter-Generational Transitions — Case Studies

Katrina Robinson, Anna Steward, Stephen Woodward, and Mark Summers

Fiduciaries serve families over decades. During an extended period of time, they witness firsthand what can happen when an old guard of decision makers fails to plan for an orderly transition to the NextGeneration. They have also experienced what families can do well to facilitate this critical process. Mark will moderate a panel with Katrina, Anna and Stephen. They will discuss a case study of an inter-generational transition and will share (i) what went well, (ii) what could have been done better and (iii) the lessons learned.

How to Structure your Family Office to Empower the NextGeneration

Giacomo Sella, Emanuela Musci, and Josip Kotlar

The ever-changing landscape of family offices—characterized by evolving family structures, the emergence of new asset classes, and mounting concerns regarding social and environmental impact—demands that families and family offices take a holistic approach. Josip will lead a discussion with Giacomo and Emanuela on how their families created synergies between financial, human, and socio-emotional wealth, while also creating new opportunities for engagement of younger generations of family members. They will also discuss the main challenges and opportunities associated with next generation engagement and the lessons learned.

Presentation: How to Structure your Family Office to Empower the NextGeneration

How to Be a G7 of a Family of Innovators

Guillaume Desforges and Alessandro Bavila

After a brief description of his family history (dating back to the 18th century), Guillaume will discuss how after the sale of the fashion brand Valentino, the funds were divided among family branches. Guillaume and Alessandro will then discuss the family governance of Guillaume's own branch, describing how different family members take part in the governance bodies that have been established (Council, Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee). Guillaume will conclude with his views on the future and his thoughts on whether things should change.
