Know How

Building Bridges Between Generations

Guillermo Salazar

How can the generational gap between parents and children in a family business be overcome? Guillermo will discuss how to establish "rules of the game" for a professional relationship among family members. This requires:

(i) improved communication,
(ii) agreement on the family business purpose, and
(iii) the establishment of family charter norms.

Guillermo will discuss the overall concepts as well as selected practical case studies. He will share anecdotes and personal stories that will permit us to think strategically about the unique challenges that face multi-generational family business owners.

Fiduciary Challenges: How to Assist Families with Inter-Generational Transitions — Case Studies

Betty Andrikopoulos, Sara Schroter, David Warren and Jennifer Wioncek (Moderator)

Fiduciaries often serve families over decades. During an extended period of time, they witness firsthand what can happen when an old guard of decision makers fails to plan for an orderly transition to the NextGeneration. They have also experienced what families can do well to facilitate this critical process. Betty, Sara and David are each experienced fiduciaries, and will discuss case studies of inter-generational transitions. They will share what went well, what could have been done better and the lessons learned.

Walking the Talk: How to Implement Shared Vision and Values in a Family Enterprise

Peter Leach

Mission, vision and values have been a mantra for family businesses for several decades now. These ideas describe why the business exists (mission), what the family wants to achieve (vision) and how it will act and conduct itself (values). It is one thing, however, to present a framed mission, vision and values statement on the boardroom wall - it is quite another to 'walk the talk'. In the past two years alone, the global pandemic has tested many family businesses with all manner of unfamiliar decisions, risky propositions and potentially uncomfortable trade-offs. Families have been discovering the extent to which their mission, vision and values truly act as their 'north star', or turn out to be skin deep only. Peter will explore how the most successful business families forge a mission, vision and values set that sustains them through even the most challenging periods, as well as what to do if the words on the wall and the realities on the ground no longer align.

Successful Inter-Generational Transitions: How to Change the Governance Structure to Make Room for the NextGeneration — Case Studies

Esteban Urrea and Bruno Carvajal (Moderator)

Once a family reaches the G3 or G4 stages, the governance structure needs to be altered to permit a larger group of family members to participate in the collective decision making.

Bruno will moderate a family-only panel where family members will discuss the governance structure of their respective family systems and provide examples of how the governance structure of their family system was altered to make room for the NextGeneration. In addition, they will briefly touch on the family protocols that needed to be implemented to provide: (i) transparency of the requirements needed for a NextGen to be able to participate in the governance structure, and (ii) the agreed upon processes that needed to be followed.

This presentation will enlist the participants in examining these two essential aspects of endurability and how to develop them in their families.
